Galatasaray have been a shadow of their former self especially in the Champions League this season. This has put new manager Cesare Prandelli under the spotlight, but the former Italian national team boss has confirmed that the team’s major ambition is to win the Turkish league this season.
Galatasaray are one of the strongest clubs in Turkey, but they were beaten to the league title by Fenerbahce last season. Keen to recover the advantage on the domestic front, Prandelli says that winning the Turkish league as the priority for this campaign.
The club appeared to be going places only last season after bringing established European names like Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder. However, a difficult group coupled with the lack of league title last season appears to have changed their priorities. Galatasaray already had little chance of qualification to the knockout stages as the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal were the favourites. A 4-1 defeat against Arsenal a few weeks ago appears to have confirmed the death kneel for Galatasaray in the Champions League this campaign.
Prandelli’s efforts to concentrate on the league does not appear to be paying off at the moment. The club have been very disappointing so far and are currently fifth in the table, but they are just one point away from the top. "Dortmund is targeting the Champions League and has been playing very well for years. However, we are assigned to add the fourth star to the jersey. So, our aim is to become champions in the Super Lig. We need to ask ourselves if we are making the right moves on the pitch. You only achieve success if you really make an effort and struggle for it. My team will turn their focus on winning the domestic league,” said the former Italy national team boss.
